The other day I had a phone call asking if I could make a birthday cake with an elmo theme – it was for someone who had planned to make the cake herself but things had changed at the last minute and she just did not have the time.

I had to say no as I was already fully booked and could not squeeze another order in no matter how much I wanted to help.

I then received another call filled with hope that I could at least make the elmo cake topper for her so I said yes and I am glad I did because it made me realise that really it was just a variation on my video tutorial on how to make a shaggy teddy bear.

The only changes I made were to make the arms and legs a little longer and squash his head a little so it was elongated slightly. I painted the inside of his mouth with black food colouring everything else is the same as the tutorial which is very easy but I do have to warn you making the fur does take a little time and it seems all the bears I make these days are the shaggy version but I only have myself to blame as I sit there snipping away!!

Elmo is very popular for birthdays so I hope this is useful.

Blue comes in so many shades it is best to ask for a sample to match if your client is asking for a specific colour. These are just some of the cakes I have made in blue.

As you can see the most popular cakes I make in blue are christening cakes for little boys. Then the next most popular would be designs in the famous tiffany blue which I think is my favourite blue colour.

I have also put collages together for pink, purple, red and black & white cakes.

I thought I would start putting together different ideas for cake designs by cake colour. The first is Pink Cakes.

They range from christening and 1st birthday to 21st and 40th birthday cakes. The blossom cross cupcakes were for a christening the others were for easter. There is also a pregnant belly cake for a baby shower in the colour combination pink and black which always works.

The pink and black 40th birthday cake had silver detailing from the invitations that her mother had made.

Pinks come in such a wide colour range from soft baby to hot hot pink, dusky pink to mushroom pink. My advice is if there is a particular pink you want matched then just give your cake designer a colour swatch so that they have a reference. Colour matching is easily done as everything is hand coloured.

I hope these fondant cakes inspire you in finding the perfect cake design for your occasion.

This is the first of two collages of cake toppers that I have been asked to make for cakes. They are made out of sugarpaste or fondant with tylose mixed in to give the fondant strength. The photos here should be easier to see than the smaller pictures of the finished cakes on my site http://www.inspiredbymichelle.com.au

Beautiful baby teddy bears decorate all these cakes. I make smooth bears and a shaggy version and they can come in any colour combination you wish. Some of the christening or baptism cakes also include a little crystal cross on one of the bears paws. Like the jungle animals if you carefully remove the bears they can be kept as a memento of the day. Fondant bears are not only for baby’s cakes the image with the two shaggy bears was for a 25th wedding anniversary.
